Review - iPhone 3G - Part 6
Apple has decided to trust iTunes on this device as well, which makes it more than simply a multimedia player as it manages all the cellphone functions. The software is essential, at least in order to make the iPhone work; in fact, upon turning the device the first time, the user will need to activate the phone by inserting a working SIM card and connecting it to the computer. A reminder: the iPhone 3G is only supported by the version 7.7 of Itunes, and in order to activate the cellphone, the user will need an iTunes Store account.
The activation procedure is rather fast, and it automatically configures the connection parameters according to the SIM card provider. Itunes will also verify whether the iPhone firmware is updated to the last available version. If not, it’ll warn about the update and the user will decide whether to install the newest version or not. The update verification is automatic and happens quite often.
